Geeta Phogat is the eldest of the Phogat wrestling sisters. At the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games she became the first Indian woman to win a wrestling gold, in the 55 kg category, and at London 2012 she became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics in wrestling. She has medalled at the Commonwealth and Asian Wrestling Championships and holds the Arjuna Award.
Her early career, alongside her sister Babita, is the spine of the 2016 film Dangal, and the film's reach means most Indian audiences already know the outline of her story before she walks on. What they do not know is the detail, and that is what she delivers.
She speaks in Hindi, with English as needed, about being first: the training load, the family structure that made it possible, the scrutiny that came with it, and the price paid for each of those milestones. She also covers Olympic qualification pathways and the state of women's combat sport in India. Women's day events, school and college programmes and sales kickoffs get a story about going where no one from your background has gone, told without self-pity.
