Mythologist and author of Business Sutra who reads leadership and organisations through Indian lore

Devdutt Pattanaik is a mythologist, author and illustrator whose work reads the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Puranas and the Jain and Buddhist traditions alongside modern life. He trained as a medical doctor and worked in the pharmaceutical industry before leaving to write and speak full-time. He has written more than fifty books, including Business Sutra, My Gita, Jaya and Sita.
He served as chief belief officer at Future Group during the peak years of Indian organised retail, has taught and lectured at leading Indian management schools, and is a regular presence on television and in national newspapers. His central argument is that Indian ideas of dharma, hierarchy and belief explain how Indian organisations actually behave, and that leaders who understand this make better decisions.
On stage he draws as he talks, uses stories from the epics as working examples, and is sharp and often provocative in his reading of corporate life. He speaks in English and Hindi and suits leadership offsites, annual conferences, HR and culture summits and founder's days where the organiser wants a framework for leadership that is rooted in Indian culture rather than translated from a Western textbook. Audiences leave seeing their own organisation's politics and hierarchies in a new and useful light.
